As relative of the house of Zhou 周 the rulers of Han (often written Hann to distinguish it the Han 漢) were enfeoffed as viscounts (zi 子). Their permanent struggle with the other nobility inside the state of Jin 晉 ended with the destruction of Jin by Han, Zhao 趙, and Wei 魏 in 452. With the official acceptance of the matters of fact that Jin was destroyed and these three states had taken over its territory by the king of Zhou the rulers of Han adopted the title of marquis (hou 侯). Han was able to destroy the state of Zheng 鄭 in 375 and gradually advanced to the west. Under military pressure four sides (Qin 秦 in the west, Wei in the east, Zhao in the north and Chu 楚 in the south) Han underwent fiscal, administrative and military reform under the legist chancellor Shen Buhai 申不害 but was destroyed in 230 by the powerful state of Qin.
The name of Han was never again used as name for a dynasty, only for princedoms.
